Security must be maintained
Transport companies are being reminded to be extra vigilant in the bid to cut down on criminal activity.
The UK Border Agency has estimated that around £250m is lost each year due to transport related crime.
Drivers must be extra cautious, making it routine to check trailer and pannier doors are locked to ensure they are less of a target for thief’s and illegal immigrants.
The UK Border Agency actively encourages all drivers and haulage companies to make an adequate checklist of their vehicle and load before entering the UK Border.
Those who fail to provide adequate checks can face a penalty of up to £2,000 per person found.
It is important that drivers if possible always park in a designated lorry safe zone to prevent crime and stowaways.
