Green light given for improvements to A21
A long awaited major road scheme along the A21 has been given the go ahead by the Department for Transport to help reduce congestion, traffic jams, pollution and accidents along the busy Kent truck road after being described as “one of the worst blackspots in the country.”
The DfT announced development work into six road schemes in 2012, with the widening of 2.5 miles of the A21 one of them.
A Public Inquiry followed in 2013 and the transport secretary announced last week (1 May) he was accepting the planning inspector’s recommendations and that work could start later this year.
The transport secretary announced last week, after a public inquiry followed in 2013, that he was accepting the planning inspector’s recommendations and that was set to go ahead later on in the year, followed by the main construction to commence in spring 2015.
Greg Clark, Turnbridge Wells MP, said of the A21 at Castle Hill: “This stretch of road is notorious across the South East for its tailbacks, as well as being one of the worst accident blackspots in the country.”
“We can now look forward with confidence to an end to constant traffic jams, appalling accidents and the pollution caused by idling engines.”
